CapoeiraDC and Sambart Entertainment welcomes you to the home to the first annual Afro-Brazilian Arts and Cultural Heritage Festival in Washington DC, June 6-12, 2011. We invite you to join us in exploring the tantalizing world of Afro-Brazilian culture, music, dance, martial arts and gastronomy. Intoxicate your senses by listening to heart thumping live percussion, tasting the rich flavor of dende oil and kick of malagueta peppers, expanding your mind by participating in panel discussions, and challenging your body to move in sync to Afro-Brazilian rhythms. CapoeiraDC
CapoeiraDC (Capoeira Malês DC) is a community-run nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira in the nation’s capital through classes, community outreach and access, and youth development. Capoeira is a unique blend of martial arts, dance, and music that evolved from the vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture. Under the tuteledge of Mestre Curisco and the leadership of Instrutor Morcego, for nearly a decade Capoeira Males DC has been providing quality arts instruction and offering free innovative community outreach events.
Sambart Entertainment
Sambart Entertainment was founded under the artistic leadership and direction of world-renown dancer and choreographer, Sonia Pessoa. Sambart Entertainment emphasizes the cultural traditions of Brazil through colorful, elegant costume, traditional Brazilian food, percussion music, and exotic high-spirited dance. Since its inception in 1992, Sambart has been dedicated to promoting Brazilian culture and 'Carnaval' throughout the United States and the world. Sambart Entertainment’s sambistas have performed nationally and internationally including at Marcus Theater on Broadway, the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and Jamaican Carnival.
